Who can certify a document

Before asking someone firstly check with the organisation that requires the certified copy if they have specific rules as to who can certify the document.

You should ask a professional person or someone who is well-respected in your community. The person certifying the document may charge you a fee. Examples of those that can certify documents are:

  • solicitor
  • police officer
  • councillor
  • bank or building society official
  • dentist
  • teacher or lecturer

Here are some examples of people that you shouldn’t ask:

  • someone in a relationship with you
  • a person living at the same address
  • someone that is related to you
